El término bestiario proviene del Latín bestiarum y es un compendio de bestias. Se hicieron muy populares durante la Edad Media. El bestiario es también una referencia al lenguaje simbólico de los animales en la literatura y el arte cristianos de occidente. La primera obra considerada como bestiario es el Physiologus. Se trata de un antiguo volumen griego, de autor anónimo y fecha incierta, que se realizó en Alejandría y se presume fue realizado entre los siglos II y IV.
El bestiario medieval más famoso es el Bestiario de Aberdeen. Hay muchos más, y hoy en día sobreviven más de cien. Uno de ellos fue compuesto por el artista italiano Leonardo da Vinci.
El bestiario mitológico es una recopilación de animales y criaturas monstruosas, quiméricas e irreales, creados por el hombre sintiendo fascinación, respeto o temor por las criaturas que, junto a él, poblaban la Tierra.

The term bestiary comes from the Latin bestiarum, a compendium of beasts. They became very popular during the Middle Ages. The bestiary is also a reference to the symbolic language of animals in Western Christian literature and art. The first work considered as a bestiary is the Physiologus. It is an ancient Greek volume, by an anonymous author and uncertain date, made in Alexandria and is presumed to have been made between the 2nd and 4th centuries.
The most famous medieval bestiary is the Aberdeen Bestiary. There are many more, and more than a hundred survive today: Leonardo da Vinci, the Italian artist, composed one of those.
The mythological bestiary is a compilation of monstrous, chimerical, and unreal animals and creatures created by man out of the fascination, respect, or fear for the creatures that populated the Earth along with him.
